Description This design references many elements of the arts and culture of Edo-period Japan. It features a folkloric Karasu (jungle crow) diving into the tempestuous Hokusai-inspired waves. The bird clutches a golden-lacquered samurai sword and has become entangled in strings of koinobori (hand-painted, fish-shaped flags) and a fish skeleton. The borders of the illustration depict a beautifully plaited samurai rope. Throughout the design, details and names are noted in Japanese hand-script, echoing ancient zoological manuscripts from the 17th century, along with Hanko stamps bearing the names Sabina Savage and Koinobori Karasu.
